To apply to have your batteries included on the Clean Energy Council Approved Products List, ensure that your products meet the requirements and that you complete the following process.

Step 1

Ensure you meet the listing requirements

Lithium-based battery system (BS) and battery energy storage system (BESS) products can be included on the Approved Products List. These products are assessed using the first three methods outlined in the Battery Safety Guide.

Listing requirements for each of the three methods can be found in the associated application checklists:

Method 4 is excluded as it allows for non-specific selection of standards as identified by use of matrix to address known risks and apply defined compliance criteria.

Details of certified laboratories can be found on the IEC website. The Clean Energy Council will accept certification from both IEC and JAS-ANZ-accredited certifying bodies.

Step 2

Ensure you have at least one importer or local manufacturer of the product (Australian subsidiary).

The Clean Energy Council requires manufacturers to nominate the importers who are responsible for meeting the manufacturer warranty obligations in Australia.

Importers must be a legally identifiable Australian or New Zealand entity, holding an Australian Business Number (ABN) or a New Zealand Inland Revenue Department (IRD) number.

Step 3

Ensure you have the required documents

The following documents must be submitted with your application.

  • Certificate complying to all standards (please refer to checklist).
  • Test reports to all standards.
  • Self-assessed declaration to separate specific requirements.
  • Installation manual:
    • DC isolator requirements
    • distance of any standoff from a wall, floor or ceiling/roof
    • distance from any heat source
    • distance/clearances from any equipment/wall/structure to the sides, bottom and top
    • clearance distances from vents to any wall, other equipment or structure
    • can it be installed indoors or outdoors?
    • can it be exposed to direct sunlight?
    • ventilation requirements for indoor use.
  • Data sheet/brochure:
    • maximum operating temperature (no derating)
    • minimum operating temperature (no derating)
    • maximum voltage
    • nominal operating voltage
    • IP rating
    • nominal capacity
    • depth of discharge
    • usable capacity.
  • Detailed safety datasheet (SDS):
    • clear instructions on any chemical hazards within the equipment or its components, and how to deal with safety issues related to those chemicals
    • visit Safe Work Australia's website for more information.
  • User guide:
    • any maintenance or optional process or procedures for the user need to be supplied with the equipment (including any shutdown or isolation processes and associated labels or warnings).
  • ERAC listings.
  • Importer declaration.
  • Battery compatibility statement.

Ratings note

Battery system (BS) – the energy capacity (DC kWh) of the battery system at beginning of life, at the maximum recommended depth of discharge, 25°C ambient temperature, measured at a 0.1C or greater charge/discharge power.

Pre-assembled integrated battery energy storage system (BESS) – the energy capacity (kWh) of the BESS at beginning of life, at the maximum recommended depth of discharge, 25°C ambient temperature, measured at a 0.1C or greater charge/discharge power.

Step 4
